  • Save money: this DIY taco seasoning is so much less expensive than the taco seasoning packets. Plus, you likely already have all the ingredients in your spice cabinet.
  • Buy the simple ingredients from Thrive Market and save even more.
  • Save time: Easy to make in just 5 minutes.
  • Put health on the list: No salt makes this the perfect tasty addition to your mexican recipes if you’re on a low-sodium diet.
  • Read the ingredient list and nutrition information and ingredient list on the taco seasoning packets…that’s it. You’ll instantly be sold on making homemade no salt or low sodium taco seasoning.
  • Delish: No salt taco seasoning is the perfect, tasty addition to your spice cabinet, even when you’re watching your sodium intake. You can always add a bit of salt to a finished recipe, but you can’t take it out once it’s there.

Ingredients and substitutions

You can find the main ingredients of this easy taco seasoning recipe in your spice cabinet. I use so much cumin and chili powder, that I stock up when I place my thrive market orders. If you’re on a low sodium diet, you’ll be surprised how much flavor this no salt seasoning adds to your recipes.

  • Chili powder: The main ingredient helps with digestion, is anti-inflammatory and helps build immunity. Regular chili powder adds tons of flavor without much heat. Use a bit of chipotle chili powder or ancho chili powder mixed in with the regular for a spicy taco seasoning.
  • Cumin: Loaded with flavonoids that work as antioxidants. Regular or toasted ground cumin will add a rich, earthy warm flavor to this spice blend.
  • Paprika: I used regular paprika, but smoky paprika would also work well. Be careful with spicy paprika though. For extra heat add just a pinch of spicy paprika to this mexican spice blend.
  • Oregano: If you can find mexican oregano it offers a bit of a citrusy flavor, but it’s stronger so use just half the amount called for in the recipe card.
  • Onion powder: Onion powder, or onion flakes, not onion salt.
  • Garlic powder: Garlic granules or garlic powder, but not garlic salt.
  • Black Pepper: If you’re looking for more heat, also add a dash of cayenne pepper, adobo seasoning, chipotle chili powder, red pepper flakes or spicy paprika. Otherwise stick to black pepper or white pepper to add some flavor without creating a spicy taco seasoning mix.

How to make your own taco seasoning

No Salt Taco Seasoning Recipe - Debra Klein (11)
  • Place all ingredients in a small mason jar and mix well with a spoon or cover and shake well until ingredients are well distributed. You can find spice jars with lids that will fit easily in your spice cabinet.
  • That’s it! You can double or even triple the recipe to always have some available for your favorite mexican recipes. This no salt seasoning will stay good in a cool dry place for 6 months.

I had all the ingredients in the cupboard and never thought of making my own taco seasoning, thank you. This is such a good use of my spices as sometimes I don’t use them all up before the end date. Drive me bonkers just how much salt is in everything so I appreciate this no-salt seasoning version. Thanks!

I made this homemade taco seasoning recipe and followed it to a T. It was very good and tasted like taco seasoning, of course minus the salt, however it did taste bitter when I tasted it by itself and when I put it in my taco meat I could still taste the bitterness. I’m not sure what else I could add or why it’s making it taste bitter. I felt like it needed something, but I wasn’t sure what it was. So I added a little bitty bit of cinnamon. That actually helped. and it didn’t make it taste like cinnamon. Do you have any tips? Or why it was bitter? Thank you for this recipe.

Hmmmm…I love the idea of a pinch of cinnamon! The only spice in there that tastes bitter to some people is the cumin. Try tasting that on its own and see if you’re one of those people.

I just made your recipe and will see next time what it tastes like. We just had them with the packaged poison (salt). I’m tired of salt in my diet. Packaged taco seasoning has over 2,000 MG of salt!!! There are 6 servings to a package and 370 MG of salt per serving. 😫 not good for us older folks. Never thought I’d say that but it’s true. How can they get away with the salt content? Shouldn’t there be a regulation of salt in our products?? It’s in everything!! 😢

So do you add any water? I don’t see anything about that so I will add my spice mix and see! I’m so happy to have one that is salt free. When I use the store bought packages, my eyes get all swollen from the huge amount of sodium!

I’ll guess from your comment that you used this with ground meat. So, please let us know if you added water and how much while cooking it. I use this mostly with lentils, beans and veggies and I know other readers would like to hear about using this no salt seasoning with meat.

I’m assuming you’re making taco meat and if so just treat it like the packets of seasoning and add the 3/4 cup of water to it that a normal taco recipe calls for. Have a great day

        • Debra Klein

Yes, you can easily substitute this no salt taco seasoning for one of those packets when making taco meat. We also use this to season rice, beans, roasted veggies, vegan ground beef, and fajita veggies.

How much taco seasoning do you use for 2 lbs of ground meat?

    Reply

    • Debra Klein

I don’t eat meat….so I don’t have any experience with using this taco seasoning with ground meat. BUT…I can tell you that I use about 1 Tablespoon for every one cup of beans or lentils. You can probably guesstimate and use about 2 Tablespoons for every pound of meat.

Hello, could you omit the chilli powder in this? I want to make a salt free spice blend to use for black bean quesadillas for my 17 month old.

    Reply

    • Debra Klein

As long as you’re using regular chili powder, it’s not usually very spicy. Chipotle chili powder has the same flavors but is super spicy, so for sure don’t use that. Although you could omit the chili powder, it is one of the main ingredients and brings so much flavor to this taco seasoning. So, if your concern is to keep things on the mild side for your child, you should be OK with regular chili powder. If you need to omit it for other reasons, use additional paprika and cumin.

How many Tablespoons of this taco seasoning are needed per 1 Lb. of ground beef or shredded chicken? Please advise, thanks

    Reply

    • Debra Klein

I haven’t made this with beef or chicken…I mostly use it with beans or lentils. So, I’m guessing here, but I think 2 Tablespoons per pound of meat or chicken would be about right. 3 Tablespoons of this no salt taco seasoning is the equivalent of 1 packet of seasoning….so you could also look on the packet and follow those directions, using this no salt version instead.
