In God of War, there are 8 Valkyries that you need to kill. Once done, you can face off against the Valkyrie Queen. These are optional bosses but killing them will get you great rewards. Killing them also sets them free so you are doing a good deed here. In this God of War Valkyrie Guide, we are going to walk you through where you can find each Valkyrie, what level you should be at and how you can kill them.
Before we talk about the encounters, there are a few tips that you should keep in mind. In most cases, you should start the encounter with strong and Runic attacks. Valkyries will stand there and will wait for you to start the attack. This is a great time to do some damage. Furthermore, these are very tough enemies so you cannot be on the offensive all the time. Taking them down is going to take some time so be patient.
Atreus can use arrows to interrupt attacks and deal damage. Use him when possible. Before starting the encounter with any Valkyrie in God of War make sure that your Runic meter and Spartan Rage meter is full. You should also upgrade the abilities when possible as Runic attacks are very effective against Valkyries in God of War.
How To Kill All 9 Valkyries In God Of War
Now that you know how you can prepare for these encounters, you should also know which Valkyrie in God of War is the weakest and which one is the strongest. The following is a list of all the Valkyries in the game that you can take down, ranked from easiest to most difficult.
- Gunnr (Thamur’s Corpse)
- Kara (River Pass)
- Geirdiful (Foothills)
- Olrun (Alfheim)
- Eir (The Mountain)
- Gondul (Muspelheim)
- Rota (Helheim)
- Hildr (Niflheim)
- Valkyrie Queen Sigrun (Council of Valkyries)
Gunnr is the easiest of them all and you should defeat her first to get a taste of what you are in for. The Valkyrie Queen is obviously the most powerful. Now that we have got that out of the way we can move on to each Valkyrie and how you can kill it.
Gunnr (Thamur’s Corpse) Valkyrie Guide
The campaign will take you to Thamur’s Corpse and this is where you will find Gunnr. She is inside the Hidden Chamber of Odin. Even though the campaign will lead you here, this fight is optional so you can always come back. At level 4 the fight is a bit tricky but if you are looking for an easy when then we recommend you take on this Valkyrie at level 5.
Gunnr is the easiest of all Valkyries in God of War so use the gear that you are most used to. If you are used to a defensive Kratos that you can use that or you could put all your points into Strength. We recommend using the Realm Shift talisman to slow down time and chain combos for massive damage. Check out our dedicated guide on her moves and how you can counter them to finish off Gunnr quickly.
Kara (River Pass) Valkyrie Guide
Kara is a bit harder to beat than Gunnr but she is still pretty easy to kill compared to her other sisters. She can be found in River Pass inside a Hidden Chamber of Odin. This encounter can be a bit difficult at level 5 and we recommend you take on Kara at level 6.
Kara has a unique ability that allows her to summon level 4 Draugr. They are pretty weak and can be killed easily but they can distract you from Kara. Knocking them out of the arena is a quick way of taking them out. Check out our dedicated guide on her moves and how you can counter them to finish off Kara quickly. Once you figure out her moves and know how to counter them, taking down Kara can be fairly simple.
Geirdiful (Foothills) Valkyrie Guide
Next up we have Geirdiful. This Valkyrie can be found in the Foothills in God of War. She can be tough to defeat but once you figure out her moves the fight gets fairly simple. Follow our tips to do some damage and be patient in this fight and all other Valkyrie encounters after this one. Taking on this Valkyrie at level 6 is doable but we recommend at least level 7.
Geirdiful’s attacks are similar to Kara and Gunnr but she does put her own twists on them so beware. Check out our dedicated guide on her moves and how you can counter them to finish off Geirdiful quickly.
Olrun (Alfheim) Valkyrie Guide
Olrun can be found in Alfheim. You will need to take the boat to Light Elf Shore and locate the Hidden Chamber of Odin to take her on. We recommend level 6 for this fight but level 5 is doable if you are up for the challenge. Olrun is faster than the other Valkyries that you have fought so far.
Most of her attacks can be blocked and you can counter them to lands attacks of your own. Check out our dedicated guide on her moves and how you can counter them to finish off Geirdiful quickly.
Eir (The Mountain)Valkyrie Guide
Eir can be found in the heart of the mountain between the minecarft lift and the secondary lift you come across on your return to the Mountain. We recommend level 6 for this counter but you can defeat her at level 5 if you are looking for a more challenging fight.
Eir can shield herself with her wings but you can break through her defenses and land a few hits of your own. Once you learn her attacks the encounter becomes much easier. You can check out our dedicated guide in which we cover all her moves and how you can counter them. Remember to never have your back up against the wall when fighting Eir. Always have some wiggle room.
Gondul (Muspelheim) Valkyrie Guide
Gondul can be found in Muspelheim at the very top of the mountain. You will need to complete different trials in order to take her on. You can fight her at level 6 is you are up for the challenge but a higher level will make a lot of difference.
Gondul can throw fireballs but also uses other tricks that she picked up from her sisters. Fireball attacks are her unique ability and you can check out our dedicated guide to learn about her moves and how you can counter them. Enchantments that reduce fire damage can help out in this encounter.
Rota (Helheim) Valkyrie Guide
Rota is found in Helheim. Go past the wall of red sap located on the second small bridge on the path to the Bridge of the Damned. Beating her at level 6 is possible but a higher level will go along way. Rota is very dangerous because of her unblockable attacks.
You will see a Red circle whenever she is going to hit you with an unblockable attack. This will tell you that you need to dodge the incoming move. You can check out our dedicated guide to learn all about her attacks and how you can counter them. Her stomp move is the most devastating and she can use this move three times back-to-back. So beware.
Hildr (Niflheim) Valkyrie Guide
Hildr can be found in Niflheim behind the cursed mist maze. Poison mist is a unique ability that she can use against you. It also hinders your sight. You can use enchantments to resist this ability. Beating her at level 6 is possible but a higher level will go along way.
Hildr is not too hard to beat and most of her moves can be blocked and countered but you need to finish her off before Kratos gives in to the poison mist and that can be more challenging than it sounds. You can check out our dedicated guide to learn all her moves and how you can counter them to take her down quickly.
Valkyrie Queen Sigrun (Council of Valkyries) Guide
Once you have beaten all 8 Valkyries in God of War, you can go to the Council of Valkyries to the North of the Lake of Nine. Here is where you will encounter Sigrun, the Valkyrie Queen. She is a combination of all the previous Valkyries and can use all their moves. That is why she is the hardest boss to beat in the game. When you fight her, you never know which move she is going to use next.
Taking her on at level 7 is fairly difficult. The Superior Resurrection Stone can bring you back to life and give you another lifeline in this encounter. So have one on you. Other than that we recommend you use Legendary Runic Vestment and Ratatoskr Runic Summon for Atreus. For Kratos, you can use whatever you like but we recommend using a mix of the Ivaldi Set armor.
Sigrun, the Valkyrie Queen is the hardest boss in the game so this encounter is going to be a long one and you will die a couple of times. You can check out our dedicated guide in which we cover all of her moves and how they can be countered.
This marks the end of our God Of War Valkyrie Guide.
